A FOOLISH PRANK.

THREAD ACROSS A ROAD. TRAP FOR MOTOR-CYCLISTS. TWO LADIES AS VICTIMS. OFFENDING BOYS FUNISHED. [BY tteLEGBAFH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Tuesday. The culmination of a series of unpleasant episodes on a by-road near Stratford occurred recently when two school children stretched a thin but strong thread across the rgad at neck-high level of any person riding a motor-cycle. The local school teacher was in the habit of using this form of conveyance for trips to and from town. That afternoon, after closing her school, she rode unsuspectingly into the trap so cunningly prepared. The teacher was an experienced motorcyclist and, although cut about ihe throat by the cord, she managed to retain her control over the machine. A lady friend seated on the pillion was not so fortunate and was thrown heavily to the metalled road. As a sequel the Child Welfare Court at Stratford was occupied with a case which occasioned a good deal of interest. The ringleader of the two boys concerned was committed to the supervision of the welfare officer for a period of two years, while the other boy received similar restraint covering a 12 months' period. The lady teacher and hisr companion were awarded damages and expenses, the former for repairs to her machine and the Jatter for a new pair of silk stockings.
