AUCKLAND STOCK EXCHANGE. ACTIVITY IN BANKING. The greater part of the business on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday after the holiday was done in banking shares, which continue to be a centre of interest. Government loans were freely quoted but no sales were recorded. In banking two sales of Australasias, which brought £l4 14s at the beginning of the year, were made at £l4 i'Os. English, Scottish and Australian, which have not been dealt in since last July, sold at £7 14s. The last previous sale price was £8 6s. Bank o:, New South Wales were to be had at £4B, no buyers quoting. New Zealands changed hands at last week's latest price of 595. In insurance New Zealands were inquired for at 40s 9d, but sellers withdrew after the morning call. In loan and agency business was done in Farmers' Co-oper-ative Auctioneering, B preference, at 15s 3d, more being available at that price,, buyers 15s. The last sale was made at the beginning of November at 15s. In gas Aucklands sold at the current rate of 23s 3d, the market closing with sellers at that figure, buyers 23s 2d. In miscellaneous British Tobacco were quoted at 40s and 39s 3d. Buyers of Colonial Sugars advanced to £55, with sellers firm at £56. Farmers' Fertiliser were wanted at 81s, with holders 2s in advance. Wilsons Cement were a shade stronger than when last dealt in a fortnight ago, and were sold at 38s at the last call. No business was recorded in mining shares. The following sales took place:—Bank of Australasia, £l4 10s, £l4 10s; English, Scottish and Australian Bank, £7 14s; Bank of New Zealand, 595; Farmers' Cooperative Auctioneering, B pref., 15s 3d; Auckland Gas, 23s 3d; Wilsons Portland Cement, 38s.

AUSTRALIAN CONVERSION LOAN. OVER £24,000,000 SUBSCRIBED. The Commonwealth Treasurer. Dr. Earle Page, announced on January 24 that subscriptions to the conversion loan of £36,000,000, bearing interest at 5} per cent., and issued at £9B 10s, amounted to £24,629,160. Of this sum £15,018,200 represented conversions, and £9,610,960 cash; The banks had, therefore, to take up the balance, £11,370,840, but this would probahlv be reduced by other subscriptions. which would be received up to January 31, at which date it has been decided to close the loan.
