CROSS-HARBOUR TRAFFIC.
CONTROL OF TOWED HULKS. NEW BY-LAW APPROVED. Formal approval of a draft by-law to prohibit the berthing or unmooring, of hulks and barges during busy ferry traffic was recorded at the meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday. Letters endorsing the board's decision to impose restrictions were received from the Northcote and Birkenhead Borough Councils. The other point of view was contained in a communication signed by 32 master mariners, which stated that there was no danger of a collision or risk to life and limb, provided the existing by-laws for the control of harbour traffic were observed. The draft by-law approved stipulates that no hulk or barge dependent on other power shall be manoeuvred within the area enclosed by Queen's Wharf on the east and Prince's Wharf on the west during specified hours, which cover the morning and evening ferry rush. The regulation will not be enforceable until ratified at a special meeting of the board to be held shortly.
