ONEHUNGA INTERESTS.

USE OF SPORTS AREA, The Onehunga Borough Council met last evening. The Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, presided. The Local Government Loans Eoard wrote agreeing to the. council's proposals to raise a loan of £827 by special order over the special area recently added to the borough from One Tree Hill. The loan is for the purpose of paying for the water mains, and the term is for 36£ years, at 6 per cent, interest, and 1 per cent, sinking fund. A deputation from the Onehunga Sports Association waited on the council at its last meeting in committee in support of a request that the council should grant the recreation reserve to the association as a playing area. It was suggested the counoil should earmark all grazing fees for improving the reserve and donate £2OO or £3OO, also taking a percentage of the receipts from the scoria pit. The council in committee recommended the granting of a lease for three years at a moderate rental, provided the scheme of the Sports Association was approved by the council. The recommendation was adopted. Mr. R. G. Speight gave notice to move at the next meeting that the playing equipment in Jellicoe Park should be available for use on Sunday afernoons. Owing to the danger to children frequenting tho beach and reserve at the foot of Norman's Hill, it was decided to restrict the speed of vehicles to 15 miles an hour. . . Appreciation of the good work of Itne Onehunga Fire Brigade was expressed by the Mayor. Ho said the brigade had had to attend 23 fres during January, and the fact that the outbreaks were not of a very ser'ous nature, was largely due to the smartness of the brigade. Mr. W. C. Hill, who is an ex-fireman, with a good many years* experience, endorsed the Mayor's remarks. The town clerk was instructed to write to the brigade complimet .ing the members on their efficiency. The Mayer paid attribute to the heroic action cf the late Mr. Percy White, an Onehunga resident, who lost his life at Gornwallis or Monday, while rescuing a child from di owning. The sum of £5 5s was donated to the Herald's fund for the widows of Lieutenant Moncrieff and Captain Hood.
