THE TAKAPTJNA MEETING. VICTORY FOR DESERT GLOW. SEVERAL EXCITING FINISHES. INCREASE IN INVESTMENTS. The weather was again delightful for the conclusion of the Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting yesterday, and there was a large attendance. The course was in splendid order, and some keen racing was witnessed. Only- two actual favourites were successful, but the winners all had good followings, and the dividends were small. The Takaptana Jockey Club Handicap, the chief event, only attracted seven runners, but it was a fine race. Three furlongs from home five of the candidates had winning chances, although at the finish Desert Glow had two lengths to spare from Eden Hall and Transformer who dead-heated for second place. The consistent Dave took the open sprint in fine style, With Flying Juliet and Tea Time in the places. Speculatibn was very brisk, the totalisator handling £57,30-3 10s, compared with £39,100 on the corresponding day last year. The investments for the meeting amounted to £105,697 10s, as against £97,313, last year—an increase of £8384 10s. The results were;— MOANA HANDICAP. Of £.250: second £35, third £ls: 7 fur. 4—LIAISON. For the Moana Handicap Palmares was a slightly better favourite than La Roma, with fair support also for the Atapai—High Tide bracket. Atapai was quickest to begin, but along the back Air King had charge from Liaison, Palmares, Atapai, Idun and Sir Henry. Crossing the top Air King and Liaison were together in front, and they led into the straight several lengths clear of Palmares. Atapai and British King. In the run home Liaison beat Air King by a length, Palmares being three lengths away •third. British King was fourth, followed by Atapai, Brilliant Light, La Roma and Idun. The favourite had every chance but La Roma did not begin too well from the

outside and was nevsr dangerous. Liaison v.-on nicely. British )ving also made a good allowing and will improve. Bold Front. Uralla and Red Comet were fairly evenly backed for the Waiwera Highweight Handicap, Red Comet gave some trouble at the start,, but he was eventually first away, soon to be headed by Lady Spalpeen. Passing the stand Lady Spalpeen just led Red Com<st and Beau Cavalier, with Uralla and Pekatalii nest, r.;:d a gap of several lengths to Bold Front. Red Comet ■took charge along the back from Lady Spalpeen, Uralla, Pekatahi and Bold Front. Nearing the homo turn Bold Front moved up on the rails and was second to Red Comet, with Lady Spalpeen. For the Devonport Handicap Speechless was a pronounced favourite, nearly twice as well backed as the second choice. Winsome Boy, who had a slight call over Ripon Abbey. Lady Robinson gave trouble at the post and was sent to the outside. Eventually a good start was effected. Lady Robinson running through quickly to lead along the back from 3ipon Abbey. Micrometer, Orchus, Abbey Lay, Adjuster and Winsome Boy. The order was practically the same across the top, where the field was strung out. Ladv Robinson was still in front at the turn, closely attended by Sipon Abbey, Micrometer and Orchus, with Abbey Day pushing through on the rails. In a good finish Micrometer Bcored by half a length from Ripon Abbey and Orchus, who deadheated for second. Winsome Boy was fourth, and then in order were Abbey Day. Lady Robinson, Speechless and Salamander. The favourite was in trouble early and was back last at the end of two furlongs. The Suburban Handicap was a good betting race. Tea Time being a slightly better favourite than Dave, with solid support also for Flying Juliet. T?a Time began quickest, followed by Melissa. Dave, Flying Juliet 1 and Prince Otto. Running across the top Prince Otto ran up to Tea Time, while Dave, Flying Juliet and Appellant were handy. Tea Time and Dave were first into the straight from Flying Juliet and Prince Otto. Once they straightened np Dave went on to ho comfortably by three-parts of a length from Fljicgr Juliet, who beat Tea Time by half a length. Melissa was fourth and then came Prince Otlo. Day Guard and Appellant. Desert Glow Wins Nicely. There was a {rood pool on the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap, Transformer being slightly better fancied than Desert Glow, with Eden. Hall also in fitrong demand. Hipo and Scat were first to show out from a good start, Scat leading past the stand from Hipo, Eden Hall, Wedding March and Desert Glow, with Transformer last. Running out of tba straight Transformer got on the heels of another horse and was checked momentarily. There wp.s not much cha.ige in the positions along the back, although Wedding March began to go back and Princess Ronnie took fourth position. The field bunched up crossing the top, where Wedding March had gone back last. Nearing the turn Desert Glow rushed up on the ouside and led iittta the straight from Hipo, Transformer, Scat and Eden Hall. Desert Glow drew out in the run home to win by two lengths from Transformer and Eden Hall, who dead-heated for second. Hipo was fourth, succeeded by Scat and Princess J Ronnie, with Wedding March last. Maurinena began quickest, but was soon supplanted by Footpad, who led along the back from Manriaena, Marxcis, Mithra and White Wings. The order was unchanged crossing the top, but approaching the turn Mauriaefia and Mithra took charge to show the way into tho straight to Prodice and Merxcis. Siaosi, Automne and Aurumavie. The Immigrant gave trainer J. T. Jamieson his fifth win and T. Green ais fifth winning ride at the meeting. WANGANUI NOTES. [BY TELEGRARH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WANGANUI, Monday. Trainers are having a very anxious time owing to the hard tracks. Rain is badly needed, but appears to be as far off as ever. Mr. B. T. Bemnett will take King Mart to Hawera tihis week. The son of King Mark has shown muoh promise on the tracks and should make good later on. Prior to going to Foxton Bent put np a very fast mile, but she failed to run up to expectations at the meeting Bhe is engaged at Hawera, amd may do better there, 'as she is fit enough for anything. Prior to the Foxton meeting Discourse put up a surprisingly good gallop over a mile, and his triple success was not unexpected by his connections. Bonogne is said to be a»i unlikely starter at the Egmont meeting owing to the fact that a shoe boil has been troubling him lately. It in yielding to treatment nicely. Whenuanui should be hard to beat in bis engagements at Hawera, as M. Gardner has the son of Acre in good fettle. Civility is going along nicely and having freshened up well she is likely to show improved form, at the Taranaki meeting. Yoma is to be ridden in the Egrbont Cup by Allan M.cCormac. Elysianor is not engaged at Hawera, but is to accompany Civility to New Plymouth. The tracks' at present are too hard for him to show of his best, but if rain falls in the interim, the gelding will run well. Henna, was expected to run well tin the Foxton Cup, but though she did not show up there ii> will come as no surprise to find her in the money at Hawera. There are some good hacks engaged in the Nolan Cup at Hawera on Thursday, and this event promises to be very interesting. Excellent form has been shown recently by a number of those figuring in thfc list, notably Goshawk, Broad Acre, Wayward, Discourse, Kcddar, and Greengrocer, and it looks as if tho winner will take a lot of picking. It is disappointing to find only seven left in the Egmont Cup, but no doubt the hard tracks account for several going out. Recent form points to Hynanna and Bright Glow as the m-.vrt Likely of those left in. WhenuMOiri ha* been taken out of the Flying Handicap, in . which Keremoana might find Vast Ac::e hardest to beat. San Fera is said to be in better order now than s,t Clinstnas time, and he will be hard to beat in his engagements at Hawera. J. Coleman intends taking Bent- and Service to Hawera, where the former will contest the Nolan Gold Cup the first day, «nd ' Service will be a runner in the Waip»P* Hack.
