A FINE HOLIDAY.
THOUSANDS OUT OF DOORS. REGATTA, RACES, SPORTS. MANY TRAVEL BY TRAIN. Aucklanders have come to rely on ideal holiday weather as a matter of course this season; and their best expectations were not disappointed yesterday,, when many thousands enjoyed £nniversary Day out of doors after their own inclination. Clouds and a gentle breeze tempered the heat, and were an essential element in the success of the many open-air events that had been planned For the day. One of the chief attractions was the Anniversary Day regatta, which was witnessed by many thousands from the shores of the harbour, from special excursion boats and from scores of private craft. The Takapuna Jockey Club's Summer Meeting drew large crowds across the water; and about the city and suburbs tennis championships at Stanley Street, cricket matches, bowls, croquet and golf contests all proved centres of interest. Apart from the thousands of motorists, large numbers of people made use of the railway service to take them away from their homes for the day., The special train to Helensville, where an agricultural and pastoral show was held, took away about 700 passengers.. The special train to the Waiuku sports meeting was riot so largely patronised, but th'"e was a large number on the train taking people to the Hamilton regatta. The usual -expresses to Whangarei, Thames and Rotorua were all crowded, and three large trains came in to Auckland from the south in the morning. The multitude of pleasure resorts within -easy distance of the city each had its quota of holiday-makers enjoying the freedom of the day to the full.
