NAVY OF AMERICA.
MEN FOR NEW CRUISERS. FURTHER 20,000 REQUIRED. A. and N.Z. WASHINGTON, Jan. 27. Admiral Bueret, Chief Construction Officer of the Navy Department, informed the Naval Committee of tiie House of Representatives that an increase of approximately 20,000 enlisted men and 825 officers would be necessary to man the eight cruisers now under construction and the 25 cruisers contemplated in the fiveyear programme. He said the eight cruisers now under construction cost approximately £3,300,000 each.
MEW CONSTRUCTION SCHEME. SUPPORT OF WOMEN SOUGHT. (Received January 29, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. NEW YORK, Jan. 28. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says a campaign which i;s designed to win support for the Naval Construction Bill now before Congress, is to be pursued among women voters throughout the country. At the women's patriotic conference on national defence, which will meet in New York on February 1, 24 women's patriotic societies wjll be represented.
