ELLERSLIE HOUSE BURNED.
RAPID SPREAD OF FLAMES. A spectacular fire completely destroyed a large two-storeyed house at the corner of Wilson Street and Park Road, Ellerslie, at an early hour yesterday morning. The house, which was owned by Mr. F. Alpe, was unoccupied and contained no .furnishings. When a neighbour gave the alarm to the One Tree Hill fire brigade the house was a mass of flajnes, and ifc was impossible to do anything to save it. The adjoining houses, which were only 15ft. away, were in considerable danger, and it was with some difficulty that the brigade prevented the flames from spreading. The paintwork on one house was badly scorched, but r.o other damage was done. The origin of the fire is unknown. A neighbour reported hearing an explosion shortly before the fire was discovered, and by the time the alarm was given the wliole structure was burning .so fiercely that there was no indication where the outbreak started.
