CAPITAL AND LABOUR.

ROUND-TABLE CONFERENCE. CO-OPERATION IN AMERICA. AN AID TO PROSPERITY. Round-table conferences between employers and employees at which various matters of mutual interest are discussed is one of the ways in which co-operation between labour and capital is maintained in the United States, according to Mr. 11. Heinz, president of the firm of H. J. Heinz and Company, with headquarters at Pittsburgh, who arrived from Vancouver by the Aorangi last evening. Accompanied by Mr. Rex Finn, also of Pittsburgh, Mr. Heinz will spend a month in New Zealand on a combined business a:ad pleasure trip. Arbitration and conciliation was used iri the United States for settling labour disputes, he stated. Instancing the happj relations between labour and capital, he stated that 12,000 people were employed at his works in Pittsburgh and during the past 59 years there had been no strikes or wages disputes. One reason for the present prosperity cf the United States was the understanding arrived at between capital and labour. A second reason was the high rate of wages paid, and a third reason was mass production. This enabled manufacturers to produce goods more cheaply and to pay higher wages. An interesting feature of Mr Heinz's own business is that the eleven directors of the firm all rose in the business. Three of them commenced as office boys, thtee others began as salesmen, and the others commended their careers in overalls in the workshops. Mr. Heinz believes in personal contact, and he thought New Zealand should be represented in some way in Washington. People of the United States were greatly interested in this Dominion, particularly its scenic and sporting attractions, its Government and its industries. Both Mr. Heinz and Mr. Finn will do some swordfishing at the Bay of Islands. "1 have read much about your wonderful fishing and am greatly looking forward to experiencing some of your sport," said Mr. Heinz. They will probably spend about two weeks in the Bay of Islands. Mr. Heinz is not a novice so far as deepsea fishing is concerned, having enjoyed some of the sport at Catalina , Island. After a month in New Zealand the visitors will proceed to Australia, where they will spend a month.
