AMOUNT OF BORROWING.
NECESSITY FOR DISCRETION.
A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE, Jan. 6. In his annual address to the members of the Melbourne Stock Exchange, the chairman, Mr. F. Woods, expressed his concern at the rate at which Australia was borrowing. He said economy with discretion appeared to be more necessary than ever. The national debt was increasing at a greater rate than it should, and thij question of the debt 6hould be carefully examined. For the past year borrowing had increased by nearly £35,000,000. There seemed to be a tendency to get everything under control except the cost of production and borrowing.
