SHORTAGE OF WATER.
ASSISTANCE OF PUBLIC. POSITION AT TAKAPUNA. "People are responding very well to the City Council's requests for the conservation of water," said Mr. J. A. C. Allum yesterday. The Waterworks Committee, he said, had several men in the city and suburbs enforcing the restrictions and attending to leaky taps. There had been surprisingly few complaints of hoses being used, while large numbers of residents were availing themselves of the department's offer to repair taps free of charge. It is not expected that (he dry spell will have any effect on Takapuna's water supply. The borough engineer said yesterday that there was plenty of water and no trouble was anticipated. The level of the lake above sea-water is Ift. llin., as compared with 2ft. Bin. last year.
