MISS MAUDE ROYDEN.

LECTURES IN AMERICA. CRITICISM BY METHODISTS. DISAPPROVAL OF SMOKING. By Telegraph—Press Association—'Copyright. (Received January 2, 7.15 p.m.) A. and N.Z. NEW YORK, Jan. 1. It is announced that the Chicago and Boston branches of the Methodist Episcopal Church Women's Home Missionary Society hava cancelled their engagements with Miss Maude Royden, tl e well-known English preacher;, to address them, on the ground that she smokes. Miss Royden arrived in America recently on an extensive lecturing tour. The Chicago Methodist women say: "Smoking is not a general practice in this country, and it is not done at all by the women of our churches." Miss Royden replied: "I do not care a button whether I smoke while I am in America or not, but certainly I do not concede that it is a matter of religious importance. "■ Miss Roydeci's tour, however, is otherwise popular, and 350 applications from various religious organisations to hear her have been refused owing to lack of time.
