REPUBLICAN NOMINATION. SUPPORT FOR MR. MELLON. (Received Decerned 29, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. PITTSBURG. Deo. 28. It is understood that ' the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Andrew Mellon, will be a candidate for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in 1928. His friends have created an organisation which is arranging the details of his candidature with great thoroughness. A book will shortly be issued which will give details of Mr. Mellon's life and his striking achievements, and will emphasise the necessity to have him at the White House.

Mr. Andrew W. Mellon was born at Pittsburg in 1855. After graduating there he entered the banking house of Thos. Mellon and Son, a corporation which he developed into a vast financial concern, controlling coal, iron, and oil industries The late President Harding appointed him Secretary to the Treasury in 1921, a post which he still holds. He has been very prominent in the international negotiations over the war debts. He is old, very astute, and of very wide and deep financial acumen and experience and immensely wealthy. He had prior to 1921 token no part at aTI in public affairs. He took over the vast business of the country's finances after the wartime confusion and straightened them oui, not without some conflict and criticism in Europe, as recently with Mr. Winston Churchill over the war debt Cjuestion.
