HOSIERY MANUFACTURE.
INDUSTRY IN DOMINION. EXTENSION OF OPERATIONS. The statistics relating to the hosieryindustry in New Zealand during the yearended March 31, i 927, disclose, in 'comparison with those for the previous year, increases of 29 per cent, in the value of land, "buildings, j>lant and machinery; of 15 per cent, in the number of employees, engaged; and of 23 per cent, in the annual salaries and wages bill. The number of factories was recorded as 19 for 1926-27, against It) in 1925-26,, while the number of persons engaged (including working proprietors) increased from 498 to 575. Salaries and wages, amounted to £63,029 in 1925-26 and £77,267 in 1926-27. The total cost of materials used increased from £162,919 to £163,371, while the value of products decreased front £297,076 to £296,759. The " added value," which represents, the difference between the cost' of materials and the value of products, fell, from £134,157 in 19,25-26 to £133,388 in 1926-27.
