HOWICK NEWS.
MANY SUMMER VISITORS. To mark the 80th anniversary' of the building of tho Roman Catholic Church at Howick, members and friends held a fair and social gathering in the Howick Hall on Wednesday and Thursday to ■raise funds for restoration purposes. The foundation, of the church is showing signs of decay, and the intention is to have this historic building strengthened. There were largo attendances on both days. The result was most gratifying to the promoters.
The popularity of Howick as a holiday resort is indicated by tho large number of visitors in the district. The three beaches in the neighbourhood, Howick, Mellon's BajA and Cockle Bay, are thronged daily with picnic parties, and every house and beach cottage is occupied. This year has seen a great increase in new buildings, particularly bungalows. The new two-storey brick building of shops and residential flats in Pictori Street is nearing completion. The re-erection of the Marino Hotel, which' was destroyed by fire recently, may be looked for at an early date.
