QUESTION OF IMPRISONMENT.

A sequel to a police raid on the premises of Robert Ryan, aged 58, described as a manager, at 63, Queen Street,* on Wednesday afternoon, was the appearance of -Ryan in the Police Court yesterday charged with keeping a common gaming house. He pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective Cummings said accused was a bookmaker carrying on a large business in Auckland. _ When his place was raided a lot of betting material was discovered. . In December, 1925, he had been Inned £IOO for a similar offence. "He had £6O on him when he was arrested," added the chief detective. " He is in a good financial position." The Magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean (to accused): What will Ido ? Send you to prison for a term ? You know, I suppose, you are liable to three months ? Ryan did not answer.

" Is there any reason why I should not pass sentence of three months' imprisonment on you ?" the magistrata asked. " You have already been fined the maximum penalty once." Ryan: I am. an old man, sir, and I have a large family to keep. There are a number of children.

The Magistrate: But I suppose you have been keeping them well until now. You must have been making a lot of money. Ryan was fined the maximum amount. £IOO.

The Magistrate: When is he likely to pay, Mr. Cummings ?

" It will be a cash transaction," replied the chief detective.
