MARINE'S FATAL FALL.

DEATH FOLLOWS INJURIES. An inquest concerning the death of William Hill Woodruff, aged 25, a marine on If-M.S. Diomede, who died on Sunday evening as a result of a fall, was held yesterday. A verdict was returned by the coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., that death was due to a fracture of the skull, accidentally received. Evidence was given that Woodruff was half way across the gangway connecting the ship and the wharf when he slipped underneath the side-rope, and fell about 12ft. on to a log fender between H.M.S. Diomede and the piles of the wharf. After striking the fender he fell into the sea, and although promptly rescued by a sailor, he succumbed to his injuries at eight o'clock, three hours after tho accident. At a naval inquiry hold afc Devonport it was found the fall was accidental.
