MT. ST. JOHN CRATER.
CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUND.
THE LEVELLING COMPLETED
Excellent progress has been made with the conversion of the crater of Mount St. John into a children's playground, although the dry weather of the past few weeks has delayed the growth of grass planted three weeks ago, when the contractors ceased work.
Originally it was intended to level the crater to form an area suitable for cricket or tennis courts, but when work, was about to be commenced, it was realised that such a project would be impossible if the symmetry of the summit was to be preserved. Since excavation and levelliifg, the area has been found to be almost an acre. The total area of the domain, which is controlled by the One Tree Hill Road Board, is 13 acres. Mount St. John is in the centre of a district which lias long been in need of public playing grounds. Although not fully meeting requirements, the new ground will at least provide recreation for hundreds of neighbouring children. It is easily accessible, there being three entrances. As the ground is not at present fit for use an early start will be made in sowing more grass, possibly before the schools reopen.
