KEG OF BEER REMOVED.

THEFT CHARGE AS SEQUEL. PRACTICAL JOKE AT PUKEKOHE. [BST TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. A practical joke which had a serious sequel was related before Messrs. J. T. Stembridge and C. K. Lawrie, J.P.'s, in the Pukekolie Police Court to-day, when a Maori, Thomas Tuhi, was charged with the theft of a fivs-gallon keg of beer. It was stated that the keg was loaded at Pukekohe on to a motor-lorry plying to one of the outer districts of the county. Whilf? the driver was absent, Tuhi took it and hid it nearby. He was under the influence of liquor at the time. Tuhi said the affair was a practical joke. He was one of a party of natives who saw the keg loaded on to the lorry, and someone suggested they should hide it and see if the driver missed it, and how much concern he would show about it. He, Tuhi, acted on the suggestion. Accepting the explanation that the affair was a practical joke, the Bench dismissed the case, but prohibited Tuhi for 12 months.
