OWNERS FORCE THE ISSUE.
GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE. USE OF FULL POWERS. A critical stage has been reached in the Australian shipping industry as a result of developments from the waterside workers' refusal to work overtime. The demand by shipowners that they should comply fully with the conditions laid down in awards and agreements has been ignored. The dispute was brought to its climax last evening when a con ference of all the shipowners concerned, held in Melbourne, decided to stop work on steamers in all Australian ports as from last night This does not affect vessels of the Commonwealth Line, nor those engaged in the Tasmanian service. Resolutions were passed by both Houses of the Federal Parlia ment, in spite of violent protests from Labour members, endorsing the Government's declaration of its determination to use all its powers to secure the maintenance of shipping services and the protection of those engaged in them..
