CANBERRA DAM SCHEME.
ROOM FOR REGATTAS. COST ESTIMATED AT £60,000. The Australian Federal Public Works Committee will probably consider u scheme for tho construction of a dam at Canberra early next year, and if it approves the work will be put in hand without delay. The chairman of the Federal Capital Commission, Sir John Butters., indicated recently that the first section of the modified lake scheme would probably be submitted to the Accounts Committee within a couple of months. The scheme, Sir John said, would provide for the construction of a dam on the Molonglo River, extending from a point near Government House, at Yarralumla back to the Commonwealth Avenue bridge, practically in the heart of the city. While the width at the bridge would not be affected, he said, the dam would widen out tome little distance out and it would be "quite prac ticable to hold regattas and'aquatic carnivals. The lake scheme has been considered by the Public Accounts Committee onco, but it has, as a result of recommendations made, been allowed to stand in abeyance. The proposal to construct a dam is really a modification of the original scheme. The cost would be •bout £60,000.
