MINING NEWS.

REPORTS OF MANAGERS. New Waiotahi.—The drive hillward for the Waiotahi-Cambria reef has been advanced 7ft. for the week, with no chango 1 in . the nafure of the hard erey andesite which is being penetrated. •Mount Welcome,—Since last report work has been resumed in No. 2 level. The water is lowering about sft. a week and is now 30ft. below the level. The winze should be dry before Christmas. In the meantime we are working the southern end of the winze to pick up the run of gold which could not be worked last summer owing to the water being?too high. In the quartz broken down some good colours of gold showed and about four shifts of work should bring us on to some good stone, as gold: was left m the stopo floor above this point. Hatiraki Mines —The Hauraki shuft is now 40ft, below the 400 ft. level and the permanent penthouse has been constructed and approved by the inspector of mines. The Cameron sinking pump is below the penthouse and easily dealing with the incoming water, and all necessary provision has been made for (.he safe sinking of the shaft. J.he lock drill is working satisfactorily and the explosive charges are tired by electric battery in a dry place at the 400 ft. level. The country rock continues of the same favourable nature n« that met with where the rich ore was obtained in the upper levels. The cross reef, which is striking toward the first reef expected to be met with, is dipping away from the vertical andwill soon b® away from the shaft. The reef continues to carry heavy black mineralised pug on both walls which is a favourable indication for getting gold at ita junction with another reef. It is expected to meet with the No. 7"- reef at about GOft below the 400 ft. level and seeing that all the indications for gold are favourable the prospect of getting gold in the No. 7 reef seems reasonable The drive on the I reef in tlie seaward face of the 400 ft level is now within 15ft. of the estimated junction 1 with the Green Harp reef and directly under where the famous patch of that name ! was secured in the early days. The reef being driven on is from (Sin. to 9in. m width and so far has not been identified, hut is the same course as the Blaok reef of the Union Beach fame. Cross-cutting to ward tho Hauraki North section has been resumed.
