BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH.
UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF WORK HINEMOA PARK IMPROVEMENTS. The Birkenhead Borough Council snet last evening, the Mayor, Mr. E. G. Skeates, presiding. , It was decided to proceed with improvement work in Hinemoa Park, adjacent, to the Birkenhead Wharf, advice having been received that approval had been given to a subsidy of 50 per cent, on labour up to £lO6, under tho unemplyoment relief scheme. The Birkenhead Ratepayers' Association offered tho opinion that the council was not doing enough in regard to the relief of unemployment, and suggested the expen-. diture of any money allocated. The Maydr said that to secure tho Government subsidy application had to be made and formal procedure observed. Now that this had been successful, the association will be advised that the work outlined is to be started. It was decided to accept the lease from the Auckland Harbour Board of the old reclamation area, near the Birkenhead Wharf, for the purposes of a domain, for a period of 48 years, at an annual rental of £5. The Harbour Board intimated the conditions imposed for vesting the road reserve at the waterfront of Hinemoa Park, under which the council would be responsible for maintenance of the sionewall, could not be relaxed. The Mayor said the council should not be liable for the upkeep of the wall. The dedication of the road, therefore, is to remain in abeyance. The waterworks engineer reported the consumption of water for "November was 3,640,000 gallons. The surface of La~ke Takapuna was now 2ft. 2in. above hightide 'mark, or 4in. lower than a month ago. In connection with the portion of land required for cemetery extension, advice was received that the Minister of Lands had sanctioned an exchange of an acre of three acres three iroods of the Birkenhead Domain and an equivalent area of the present cemetery. The Waitemata County engineer suggested tho borough should share the cost of reconstruction of 10 chains of Onewa Road between the bitumen portion and Calliope Road. The engineer was requested to report to next meeting. ■ . It was resolved that the traffic inspector should be invested with the powers of a special constable. Two permits for new, buildings war® granted.
