MAKING THE ROADS SAFE. MANY BREACHES OF BY-LAWS. Approximately 100 drivers of motor vehicles were prosecuted in tho Police Court yesterday for breaches of the traffic by-laws. Three Courts were occupied in dealing with the offenders. ! During the hearing of tho cases, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., said he was going to clear the roads of careless drivers. "It is pretty extraordinary if people have not the right to board a tramcar in safety," he said. Roads should be made safe for | the legions of pedestrians. Those drivers 1 who erred toward negligence and recklessness should become more careful, and greater care should be exercised by some bus drivers. Fines of 10s were imposed on the following for leaving their cars unattended for a period longer than allowed:—R. H. Milburn, F. J. Raynor, B. W. M. Bailey, A. Blumhert, G. L. Borgolt, N„ Cole, J. C. Craig, A. Davies, W. V. HoJliday, W. J. Hood, I. F. Humphreys, M. King, E. E. Kitchener, C. H. Knight, A. H. Lees, A. J. Miller, L. T.' Munro, M. Paterson, T. Philcox, C. W. Russell, J. F. Shanley, | M. T. Tollimache, W. C. Whitney, T. Tock, W. J. Lopdell, C. S. Todd and E. W. Piatt. On charges of not having tail lights on their vehicles H. Carter, C. F. Coutts, R. W. F. Donaldson, A. H. Gillies, W. G. Heares, J. Hyman, A. E. Ivil, F. Lawson, E. A. Peterson, H. Pickering, C. M. Ross, H. T. Shepherd, A. Storinont, F. Thorn, W. H. Vickery and 0. V. Garland were each fined 10s. For similar offences J. Hollinrake, J. A. Sharp, M. Keme, V. Neale and G. W. Spragg and Company were fined ss. Penalties of 10s were inflicted on G. Hatcher, J, J. Matthews, J. \ Martin, J. McDonald and G. Poole for having insufficient lights, on their motor vehicles. Cycling without lights cost L. Baker, H. Rodgers, N. French and J. Martin £1 each, while R,. J. Dickens was fined £2. For holding on to vehicles W. E. Welsh and J. McSwiney were fined 10s each. For failing to notify the loss of a registration plate McCarten Bros, were fined £l. J. R. Simpson and H. F. Waugh were fined £2 and £l, respectively for carrying goods on a lorry without a licence. L. W. Dickson, for passing a stationary tramcar, was fined £2. Charged with dangerous driving, R. Schaare was fined £2 and for failing to produce his licence he was fined £l. Negligent driving cost H. W. Hawthorne £sj and he had to pay a similar penalty for passing a stationary tramcar. D. Cranston was fined £2 for negligent driving and £1 for passing a, tramcar. On charges of negligent driving R. V. Lawless and M Cant were fined £1 and J. Newall and J. C. Rankin 10s each. F. C. C. Smith was ordered to pay costs. For parking too far from kerbs S. Phillipson and L. A. Tozer were fined £l, and S. W. W. Tong 10s. G. Blake and E. C. Pearce were fined £1 for passing stationary tramcars. On a charge of passing a vehicle on the wrong side, R. A. White was fined 10s, Using an unregistered vehicle cost J. M. Bell 10s. R. Johnston was fined 30s for cutting a corner, while E. Jones and A. Jolly were fined £1 each For failing to obey a traffic signal L. Clark was fined 30s. For having an obscure number-plate, A. V. Thomas was fined 10s.
