DESTRUCTION BY FIRE.
LARGE HOUSE BURNED. UNFORTUNATE FISHERMAN. [BY telegraph.—press association.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. Fire practically destroyed a nine-roomed house in Island Bay at 4 a.m. to-day. Mr. George Baxter, a fisherman, who occupied the top portion of the building, saved little of his effects. The premises were owned by Mrs. Baxter. Insurances on the building were £I6OO in the Commercial Union, and the contents, owned by Baxter, for £l5O. Ronuthwaite, who occupied the lower portion, was insured for £125 in the State Office. Mr. Baxter has been particularly unfortunate of late. Coining over from Picton he lost his young son. Within a short period after that he contracted pleurisy, and ha was one of the three men .who nearly lost their lives when the launch Noma went down near tho Heads recently.
DAMAGE TO SAWMILL. OUTBREAK AT P AERO A. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PAEROA, Tuesday. An outbreak of fire occurred in a sawmill situated in Raroa Road, Paeros. early this morning. The mill was owned by Mr. H. J. Evans, and leased to Mr. W. Dean, builder, of Auckland. Thfc fira started near the boiler and the portion of the mill round tho engine-room was destroyed. _ The Paeroa volunteer brigaae rendered splrcdid service and saved the front portion of the mill, as well as several stacks of sawn timber. The owner of the null will be a heavy loser.
