inter-club Matches. Inter-club matches on Saturday were confined to the B ; C and D grades. In the B grade University had a good match with Auckland, winning by six matciies to lour. In the men's singles Jones did well to get a set from Bowden. Burt outplayed McDonald iu the first set, but. the University player speeded up his game in the second and third sets and got h e without difficulty. The Auckland ladies won both their singles, but Mrs. McCarthy had to keep u K the pressuie against Miss Hume, who was always dangerous. This was one of. the longest matches of the afternoon -and was waged from the baseline. In the men's doubles and combined doubles the University players showed a greater knowledge of the game and were not seriously troubled. This was particularly noticeable in the men's doubles when the students forced the attack, from the net position at all times. In the ladies' doubles Misses Wann and Hardy put up a good fight against Misses Whitaker and Wilson, and while they stormed the net position they looked like winning. Their retirement to baseline tactics proved their undoing. Both Campbell Park teams suffered defeat. The first was beaten by Papatoetoe and the setond by Pukeroa. The CI team iound the asphalt courts difficult to get accustomed to and this doubtless contributed somewhat to the overwhelming nature of their defeat. The C2 team was unfortunate in that two matches went by default. Matches at the Giuos.

Most oi the ciubs made a start with their matches on Saturday. At Onehunga J. and P. Harrison beat J. C. and W. J. Herbert in tjie handicap doubles, 11—6, and C. K. Harrison and J Nfeill in the championships, 6—2, 6—4. M. Robb and L. Mallitte were rally extended in the doubles championship by J C and W. J. Herbert, who were beaten, 6—4, 2—6, 6—2. W. J. Herbert shows promise of developing into a strong player. At Eden and Epsom the most interesting match was between A. C. Johns and P. Potter. Johns was fully extended to win at 7—5, 4—6, b—4. A number of matches were played at Remuera. In the men's handicap doubles 11. G. Thomson and Kerr, after losing the first sets to Levett and Hudson, won the second to love and led 5—2 and 4030 in the third, only to lose the match point and set at 5—7. Stnrt nnd Miss Napier beat Davie and Miss Nicholls by 2 sets to 1 and King and Miss Colson beat Butler and Miss Rhodes, 6—5. 6-2 Auckland may not lose A. W. &'" ,s after all. as his present plans are indefinite He will not. however, be a cornpetitoi in the New Zealand championships at Christchurch and is unlikely to be available for selection in the Wilding Shield team.
