RACING.

TAKAPUNA SPRING MEETING

KING LU WINS CHIEF EVENT.

SPRINT RACE TO PAGAN EI JLL

TRAGIC DEATH OF JOCKEY.

The Takapuna Jockey Cltib's Spring Meeting was concluded yesterday before a good attendance. It was showery and blowing when racing commenced, hat the Weather improved after a few races, although a sharp shower fell just after the last race, The course was in good order and the racing was again interesting. F ve favourites were successful and the other winners were also well backed.

Mr. R B. Hine's fine horse, King Lu, recorded a nice performance by winning the St. Andrew's Handicap, the principal event, from end to end, Valkon and Papatu filling the minor places. The favourite, Paganelli, won the sprint event in decisive fashion, having several lengths to spare from the second horse, Dave.

An unfortunate mishap, resulting in the death of the jockey R. Reilly, occurred during the running of the Rakino Handicap. Though his mount did not actually fall, Reilly was unseated from White Wings near the two-furlong post and was killed instantly, having his neck broken and his skull severely injured. It is thought that ho was thrown against the course rail. An inquiry was opened into the accident and was adjourned until 2.30

p.m. to-day. A lengthy inquiry was held with reference to the running of horses in the Takapuna Plate on the opening day, but no evidence was adduced warranting the judicial committee taking any action. The crowding at the start of the race was considered to Iks of an accidental nature. The totalisator handled £42.765 10s, compared with £40,557 10s on the corresponding day last year. The total investments for the meeting amounted to £100,526 10s. as against £82.806 10s last year—an increase of £17,720. The results were:—
