SCHOOL INSPECTOR.
RETIREMENT OF MR, J. COX.
Mr. James T. G. Cox, inspector o£ schools in Auckland, will retire tomorrow on superannuation after 41 years' service under the Department of Education. For the past 23 years Mr. Cox has occupied his present position, and during that time has covered every area and visited almost every school in the Auckland education district. Mr. Cox's long career in the service of education began in 18S6, when he received his first appointment as a pupil teacher at the Mount Albert school for a term of three years. He later assumed charge of the Maunu and Hukerenui schools, and in 1898 was appointed headmaster of Taupiri School, where he did excellent work. When Mr. Cox was appointed inspector in 1904 under the Auckland Education Board, the board placed on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered by him to the cause $ of education in this district. On the occasion of his retirement Mr. Cox was presented by his colleagues on Saturday morning with a handsome barometer and a bedroom clock, both suitably inscribed. Mr. C. W. Garrard, senior inspector for, Auckland, made the presentation and, after speaking of the high esteem m which Mr. Cox was held for his sound judgment and strict attention to duty, wished him, on behalf of his fellow inspectors, many years of happiness id his retirement. Mr. Cox responded suitably.
