Sir, —Mr, Burton's letters are still an implied claim that his league is a model of consistency. It is, I think, the very last claim the league executive would think of making, in view of the public facts summarised i» my letter of November 18 and a mass of other facts that can also be established on demand. A defender of league consistency would not have a toe to stand upon- Why does Mr. Burton continue his pointless wranglings, and still so persistently refuse to support by even a scrap of evidence his accusation that our bishops are inconsistent in opposing four oft-specified proposals of the league ? Ihus {sr, he has offered nothing in the present discussion but a vague recollection of something in unnamed "books" and funspecified and undated "newspapers." That is obviously neither evidence nor " presentable Evidence." If Mr. Burton were a prosecutor or debater arid produced no better " evidence " than that, he knows verv well that he would be laughed out of court or hall; and if he asked counsel for the defence, as he asked me. to prove the accused s innocence, while himself offering no evidence, he would hear from the bench something both harsh and personal. Let Mr. Burton cease his wrangling runaway and produce any relevant evidence whatever, in the form of exact quotations and detailed references, and it will be authoritatively tested. How many more times must I say this?
