CADETS AS ATHLETES.

VERY SUCCESSFUL SPORTS. ENCOURAGING TEAM-WORK. MANY INTERESTING CONTESTS. Seldom has a more colourful scene been presented in Auckland than that at Carlaw Park on Saturday on the occasion of the annual tabioid athletic meeting and sports tournament of the Auckland Military Sports Association. The programme included displays by members of the Interhouso Girls' Sports Association, who also contested a number of raceg. The value of the Military Sports Association was to he seen in the standard set for physical ability and team-work in the tabloid athletics. In this section, in which are entered selected teams from the various cadet companies, individual prowess counts for little compared with co-operative efficiency, The events for which points are awarded for the Herat,d Cup include 75vds. and 50yds. track races, 75yds. hurdles, sack race, hop, step and jump, high jump, broad jump, and rope climbing. , There are no individual winners, but a cadet who is unable to attain the standard in any particular race the chances of his team. There was no lack of enthusiasm, among the 450 cadets, who all wore the smart athlet:c uniform of the association. So heavy were the entries that three separate courses were necessary for the tabloid athletics. This entailed no small amount of organisation, and although events were being run off al! over tiie ground at once there was not the slightest hitch. It was very apparent Che association is carrying out a most important work in devoting time to a movement whose benefits will undoubtedly be widespread. Cadets are given a definite interest outside the learning of military manoeuvres. As every youth not medically unfit is forced to attend drill, it can be seen the association is capable of reaching a great number of boys who would otherwise have no opportunity. It was found impossible to complete the final of the tabloid sports, but the winning teams of each course will compete for the cup in the near future. Th»» finalists are:—A course, 35th Company, Devonport, 61 i points; B course, Auckland Grammar School, 55 points; C coarse, Technical College A team, 57£ points.

Among the spectacular items was a vaulting horse display by a squad from the Senior Cadets' gymnasium. The marathon race of approximately four-and-a-half miles was a contest oi the most searching nature, and the winner, Chappell, ran a great race from the start, winning by several hundred yards. Credit is due to the management committee and the large number of officials who were responsible for the successful conduct of the tournament. Music was supplied during the afternoon by the bands of the Third Auckland Mounted Rifles, First Battalion, Auckland Regiment, and Auckland Artillery. Results of Cadet Bveats.
