FARMING AT WAIKERIA.
BORSTAL INSTITUTE'S HERDS. OVER 200 COWS IN MILK. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] TE AWAMUTU Saturday Dairy farming is an important feature of the Borstal Institute at Waikeria, a few miles from Te Avvamutu, This season a third dairy herd was established and at present there arc over 200 cows in milk, assembled at. three up-to-date milking sheds. The cows are handmilked by inmates of the institution. No 1 dairy has about 110 cows, No. 2 has a total of over 70 and No. 3 the new one this season—comprises over 30. It is expected that, the herds total on the estate will next season exceed 250. Several hundred acres of land have been ploughed this season, in preparation for cropping and permanent pasture. Hie cows are in excellent condition and the butter-fat percentage is high. An important sideline to dairying at Waikeria is pig raising and fattening, and an extensive range of pens and yards is located within handy reach of No. 1 dairy. This season a large number of prime porkers have been disposed of, while several choice-bred young boars have been sent to breeders in other parts of the province.
