DRAINAGE OF LAND.

HAURAKI UNITED BOARD. IMPORTANT CONTRACTS LET. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COKBESI'ONDENT. J TURUA, Monday. Three important 'drainage contracts for improving- the efficiency of its system, were .dealt with at a special meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board. The work involves the. excavation of 30,380 cubic yards of spoil, and when completed the drain will be 30ft. wide at the Te Kauri Hood gate, narrowing to 16ft. at the junction with the Willow drain. The Ibottom width throughout will be two feet, with a batter of one vertical to one horizontal. The first contract, from the flood gate to Huirau Road, of 7800 cubic yards, was let to W. McLeod, at Is 3d a cubic yard, the work to be completed by the end of February. Contract Nx>. 2, from Huirau Road to the Turua-Netherton Road, approximately 12,300 cubic yards, was let to Nicholas Vugnovich, at Is Id a cubic yard. This also is to be completed by the end of February The remaining contract, from the Turua-Netherton Road to (he Willow drain approximately 10,500 cubic yardM. was let to Nicholas Vugnovich, at Is a cubic yard, and is to ho completed by the end of March. The board was advised that the clauses in the Local Legislation Act empowering it to operate on the loan accounts of the former Horohia and Hauraki Boards had been passed by the Legislative Council.
