COMPETITION WITH CABLES. PACIFIC BOARD'S ATTITUDE. Sun. LONDON. Nov. 20. There have been further abortive discussions among the partner Governments regarding the appointment of a chairman of the Pacific Cable Board. Apparently they consider the expense that will be involved by the appointment to bo inopportune, until the respective functions of the beam wireless and of the telegraphic cable services have been more clearly delined. The aggregate traffic between Britain and Australia and New Zealand has increased, but the competition of the beam wireless system has affected the revenue of the board, and it is likely to continue to attract the class of traffic that demands speed and cheapness, although the cable services are more secret and accurate. It is impossible at present to determine whether the beam system will be permanently competitive, or will be complementary to the cable services.
