WAIHI HOUSE DESTROYED. MOTHER AND CHILD ESCAPE. WAKENED BY STIFLING SMOKE. [BY telegraph.—own correspondent.] WAIHI, Monday. A four-roomed dwelling house in Seddon .Avenue, owned by Mr. Robert Aitken, of P-ukekohe, and occupied by Mrs. D. Coutts, was. with the whole of the contents, destroyed by fire at an early hour yesterday morning. The first warning was given by Mrs. Coutts' four-year-old son, who was awakened by suffocating smoke. Mother and child had time only to escape through a bedroom window in their night clothes. The building was then a mass of flames. The house was insured in the State Office for £IOO, and the contents for £2OO in the Liverpool and London and Globe Office. FARMER'S HOME DEMOLISHED. OWNER ABSENT AT TIME. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE AWAMUTU, Monday. Fire destroyed the six-room;d residence of Mr. Cecil Corboy, farmer, near Kihikihi, last night. Mr. Corboy left the premises apparently safe. When he returned at ten o'clock he found his home demolished. The insurance on the building was £2OO in the Alliance Office and on the effects £SO in the Guardian Office. DWELLING AT WHANGAREI. OCCUPANT LOSES HEAVILY. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI, Monday. An outbreak of fire at an early hour this morning destroyed a five-roomed house in Morningside Road occupied by Constable Marsh, and owned by the John Wright Estate. All the contents also were destroyed. Constable Marsh was awakened by the noise of the fire and found the house full of smoke. The water pressure was very poor and the brigade had a hopeless task. Constable Marsh is a heavy loser. The insurance on the furniture and effects was £275 and the building was insured for £SOO. •

FLAXMILL PLANT RUINED. QUANTITY OF HEMP DESTROYED. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN" CORRESPONDENT.] TE PUKE, Monday. A scutching plant, shed and a quantity of hemp, the property of the Te Puke Flaxmilling Company, at Pukehina, was destroyed by fire at about 7'p.m. on Saturday. The origin of the fire is unknown. No person was at work at the premises at the time. The plant and building were erected about a year ago and were electrically equipped. The loss will be a serious one. • WOOLSHED BURNED TO GROUND. FLAMES DEMOLISH CONTENTS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—I'B ess association.] GISBOBNE. Monday. Fire destroyed a woolshed on Mr. Lawson Field's property at Waimata Valley. The plant and 25 bales of wool were also lost.
