?THE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. SECOND SERIES COMPLETED. PONSONBY HEADS THE TABLE. The second series or matches in the first round of the Auckland Cricket Association's senior competition was concluded r.n Saturday. The weather was fine, with a cold wind blowing. The rain which fell in the morning did not affect the wiekets to any great extent. North Shore was the only side to gain a comploto win. Ijnited Suburbs wass robbed of like victory through lack of time. Three men were dismissed without scoring when only one run was required for a four-point win, and then stumps were drawn. Eden and Ponsonby won on the first innings from University and Par noil respectively. The following table shows the positions of the teams in the senior championship:— Team. . Won. Lo3t. Draivn. Pts. On the first day North Shore scored 418 hi response to which Grafton made just under half that number of runs. Snedden, Horspool, Sloman and Pope all batted well and then Hopkins and Dykes attacked the bowling vigorously. Grafton followed on end, although Dykes and Horspool gave the side a good atart, with the exception of Hopkins and Wylie, the remaining batsmen did not do much good and the last wicket fell in the final over of the day. North Shore thus won by an innings and !X) runs. Following are the scores;— NORTH SHORE. First Innings 4JB GRAFTON.—First Innings. C. A. Snedden, c Frater. b Webb .. 48 R. K. Wylie, run out, 3 E. Eden had very little difficulty in obtaining a first innings' lead against University •when their game was continued on No. 2 wicket at Eden Park. Cooper and G. L. Weir both batted cautiously and only seven runs were needed when Cooper was run out owing to a mistake im calling. BrookeSmith and Weir raised the score above University's total of 154, and it reached 212 befora the side was dismissed, G. L. Weir carrying his bat for 44. University's eecortd inningß opeiied disastrously and,, when four wickets fell in rapid succession and G. L. Weir bad taken three wickets for three runs, it seemed that an innings' victory might not be outside Eden's powers.. However, Gee and Barnes stopped the procession and, -when Barnes was dismissed, Bannister and Gee batted very steadily It took them 80 minutes to wipe off a deficit of 58 runs, but when Gee was caught by Butler off Whelan, Matheson and Garrard lost their wickets cheaply. Then came another partnership between Bannister and Dow, who took the total to 153. There was only about a quarter of an hour left for play and stumps were drawn with Eden victorious by 58 runs on the first innings. Following sre the scores:— UNIVERSITY.
