OBITUARY.

SULTAN OF MOROCCO. " (Received November 18, 5.5 p.m.) A. and NX-Sun.*-' LONDON, Not. li The death has occurred of the Sultan of Morocco, jMulay Yussuf, aged 45. He will probably be succeeded by his son, Prince Mulary Idris. The Sultan of Morocco, Mulay Yussuf, was born in 1882. at? /Meknes,> Morocco. He is a son of the Sultan Mulay Hassan, who ruled from 1873 "to ,1894 as the 14th of the line which has held the _ Sultanate of Morocco (Maghreb Aksa) since 1833. After Mulay Hassan's death the Sulton Abd-el-Aziz reigned until 1908. In that year he was compelled to abdicate in favour of his brother, Mulay Hafid. The later had risen against him with the help of the French, who,-by the occupation of Casablanca:, had obtained a footing Jn Morocco in" 1907. After Mulay Hafid had been induced by the French to sign an agreement consenting to a French protectorate, however, he found himself unable to hold his own against the attacks of some of the Moorish' tribes. He therefore abdicated on August 12, 1912, in consideration of a lump sum of francs. He has sinco lived at Marseilles. In Kis stead the - French placed on the throne his brother; - Mulay Yussuf. They have since protected hini against any efforts to supplant him, and the succession-is to go to his eldest son. . MR. C. Fi 6. MASTERMAN. (Received November IS, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON, Nov. 17. The death has occurred of Mr. Charles F. G. Masterman, a former Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Mr. Gharles Frederick Gurney Masterman was born in 1873. He was educated at Cambridge. In 1906 h 6 was Liberal member for West Ham but was unseated on petition in 1911. Later he won the Bethnal Green seat. He was mads ,a Privy Councillor in 1912 and was Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, 1914-15. He has written many volumes of historical and social interest. - ■ MR. JAMES BALLANCE. (Received November 18, 11.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. LONDON, Nor. 17. The death has occurred of Mr. James Ballance, a brother of the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr. John Ballance, as the result of a motor-bus accident in County Antrim, Ireland.
