FOR HONOUR'S SAKE.
PROMISE TD A WOMAN.
SIX MONTHS IN FRISON. Because lie refused to answer a question at his public examination in bankruptcy, Kevork Kriss Chavoosian, an Armenian, who is now a naturalised British subject, has spent six months in Portsmouth Prison.
Chavoosian, when questioned by the registrar, six months ago, declined to give the ntune and address of someone who, he alleged, had defrauded him, as he had made a promise to a woman and was bound to honour it.
The registrar sent the to the judge of the County Court, but Chavoosian still refused to give the information asked for. and the judge, while expressing the opinion that the man was probably actuated by the highest principles, said he had no option but to commit him to prison for contempt. Recently a solicitor suggested, on his behalf, that after the period of time he had spent in prison it might be considered that he had purged his contempt. The registrar, howevor, said the man had been very perverse and obstinate, and ho could not see that anything could be dono until he decided to answer the questions. There was a further adjournment of the examination, and Chavoosian was tomoved to Portsmouth Prison.
