THE AUCKLAND SHOW.
VERY GRATIFYING ENTRIES. WHIPPET RACING ATTRACTION. The number of entries received for the Auckland Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Show, to be held on December 2 and 3, has been very gratifying, and has fully justified the extension of the closing date until last evening. The ! promise that the stock exhibits will be among the finest of their various kinds in the Dominion is assured. A feature of the most-recently received entries is the large number from exhibitors at the Waikato show, and among the sections which have been considerably strengthened from that source are the classes for horses and Jersey cattle. Dairy cattle will naturally be prominent at the show and in this c .nection an interesting feature is tho method to be adopted in the exhibition of Friesians. Individual breeders will have their, cattle displayed in groups, a system particularly well adapted for showing the black and white breed. The president, Mr. W. W. Massev, and members of fti# association who have returned from Christehurch are enthusiastic regarding the sporting nature of whippetracing, which is to be introduced as a special feature at this year's show. "It has nothing whatever to do with tin-hare racing," said the secretary, Mr. W. F. O'Donnell. yesterday. "At the sound of a pistol the dogs are released by hand and they run between tapes to their owners, who stand some 50yds. behind the finishing-line. The speeds, the whippets attain are said to be remarkable, and the contests are all the more sporting as the dogs are running for the sheer love of the thing."
