OBITUARY.
MR. W. H. BAILEY. Mr. William Howick Bailey, aged 80, who died on Wednesday, was the first white child to be born in Howick and also the first to be christened in the historic old church, All Saints, the cere* mony taking place shortly after the! building was erected by Bishop Sehvyn. His parents arrived by the sailing ship Minerva in 1847 and were among the first to settle in the district. Mr. Bailey spent the greater part of his life in Gisborne, but ho returned to Howiok district and resided at Mellon's Bay foi» about 15 years, later removing to Penw rose. Mrs. Bailey died 12 years ago. A sister of Mr. Bailey, Mrs. Robert Massey, aged 85, is a resident of Pakuranga. The funeral took place in tie cemetery of All Saints, Howick, yesterday.
MR. C. E. WERNER. Mr. Charles Edward Werner, aged 71 ( whose death has occurred at Otahuhu, was born in Veitz, Germany, and cama to New Zealand in 1876 in the sailing ship Fritzreuther. He carried on business for 20 years -las a storekeeper on Great Barrier Island. He then moved to Kaitaia, where he was a watchmaker and jeweller for 14 years, and later to Otahuhu. Early in 1885 Mr. Werner mart ried the third daughter of the late Mr. W. Flinn, of Port Fitzroy. He is sur« vived by his wife, four sons and ona daughter. There are 12 grandchildren.
