NEED FOR ECONOMY. The Victorian Ministry is considering the possibilities of effecting economies in the working of the railways. Tho commissioners havo brought forward proposals which involvo the dismissal of about 500 men. Tho proposed retrenchment was viewed with alarm by Labour officials. In a statement, lately, tho Minister of Railways said that the commissioners' proposals had been considered by tho Ministry, but it had been decided not to adopt them for tho timo being. He had, therefore, instructed the commissioners not to dismiss any men for the present.
