STUD NOTES.

BY PHAETON.

TRIVALVE, THE STAYER.

In an interesting reference to the doughty performance registered by the three-year-old Trivnlve in winning the V.R.C. Derby ar.d Melbourne Cup, " Snowden," writing in the Australasian, penned the following: " Trival.ve fulfilled all expectations by making a hash of hia Victoria Derby opponents. He is a genuine stayer beyond The success of the son of Cyklon (by Spearmint) out of Trey (by The Welkin) will perhaps tempt many into the belief that the progeny of Spearmint horses ai>d daughters of The Welkin will g ivoa iioportion of stayers, but this idea will perhaps prove a trap. When Cyklon vas standing in South Australia some yearn ago the thought occurred to me that daughters of The Welkin might, if given the opportunity, produce smart performers by him, though probably their forte would bo races of less than 10 furlongs. That is still my opinion, as the odda are on the blood; of Cyklon's dam nicking with flat of The Welkin. That has happened in the case of Trivalve's .full-brother, Treylon, who put up a fine performance recently in coming from last less than four furlongs from homo to finish second to Vaals m the Cantala Stakes. Trivalve missed ibat blend to throw direct to his ancestor. Carbine, the paternal grandsire of Cyklon, and iilso sire of Diirn Dum, who to Larlas foaled Teppo, the dam of The Welkin's daughter Trey. When Trivalve was in his stall on Maribyrnong Trial Stakes day last year the impression that struck me most was that he was inclined to be a little straight in front. That impression and his Carbine double crossf became unforgettable. Before the first race at Flemington on October 28 Mr. E. B. Bell, who has been a. familiar figure on the Flemington tracks so many years, told mo lhat, as it would probably interest readers of those notes, Walter Hicken£botham, who oarned enduring renown as the trainor of Carbine and three other Melbourne Cup winners, had taken particular stock of Trivalve and unhesitatingly declared tnat, except in colour, Trivalve was Carbine reincarnated."
