"SNEAK THIEF" IMPRISONED.

Described in the Poli,ee Court yesterday as being "a sneak thief with a fine taste for overcoats and rugs in parked motorcars," Hamilton Maxwell, aged 54, labourer, was sentenced to two mouths' imprisonment on a charge of being idle and disorderly in that ho consorted with reputed thieves. He was sentenced to a further 14 days' imprisonment fof stealing two bundles of sacks from a Hindu.

A remand was granted in the case of Leslie Robert Ashfield, aged 21, seaman, charged with stealing two yen notes, valued at £l2, belonging to Sing 'long Fang.

Stating that numerous other charges were pending against accused, Chief-De-tective Cummings asked for a remand when James Stewart Grogan, middleaged, appeared on a charge of obtaining 20s from Roko Tomich by falsely representing he was a canvasser in the employ of the Dominion Art Company, Kohimarama, when he was instructed to cease canvassing for the company. The request was granted, accused being directed to appear in a week.

A charge of bookmaking proferred against Harry Marks was adjourned until next Thursday, it being stated that accused wished to be tried by jury. Appearing in evening suit, Raymond Emanuel, aged 33, salesman, charged with being in a state of intoxication while in control of a motor-car, and with failing to produce his licence to drive, was remanded for a week. Bail was allowed.

"This man burst open a slot gas-meter at Takapuna and stole the money; he is at present undergoing a sentence," said the chief detective, when William Henry Glanville, aged 23, painter, was charged with stealing 3s, the property of the Gas Company. Accused was convicted and ordered to make restitution of the stolen -money. On a charge of Sunday trading 0. E. Austin, Remuera, was fined 20s.

Charged with establishing a wireless plant without a licence, Mary A. Beer was fined 20s.
