AID FOR UNEMPLOYMENT.

PROGRESS OP CAMPAIGN.

FLOWER DAY REALISES £l5O.

THIS MORNING'S CANVASS.

APPEAL TO HOUSEHOLDERS

Flowers that bloom in the spring made a brave showing in Queen Street yesterday. Tho proceeds of their sale, industriously prosecuted throughout the day by a band of lady workers under the leadership of the Mayoress, Mrs. A. D. Campbell, amounted to £l5O, and will be added to the moneys raised by the £SOOO "drive," planned by the citizens' committee for tho purpose of providing relief work for the unemployed. Attractively-arranged stalls in Queen Street and an army of sellers, laden with button-holes and collection-boxes, brought that phase of the "drive" directly under the notice of all passers-by. It was hoped the proceeds of the flower day would have exceeded tho amount actually raised, but the response is, nevertheless, deemed satisfactory. A typical instance of the spirit in which tho appeal was met was provided by a man, laughingly intrigued into the purchase of a button-hole. "How much ?" he asked. "A silver coin, please," he was told. Tho purchaser thereupon quietly slipped a £5 note into the collector's box.

Roses, sweet peas, phlox, stocks, Canterbury bells, and a host of other flowers, sold in bunches and made up into buttonholes, were seen in the possession of every second passer-by. Friday is always popular for such appeals, and the sunny weather seemed to havo brought even larger shopping crowds into the city than usual, so that those responsible for the sale of the flowers were . kept busy throughout the morning and afternoon. The "drive" will enter upon its last phase this morning, when all the suburban districts in the city will be visited, and householders will be asked to contribute to the fund. The urgency of the appeal has been before the public continuously for several months, and it is hoped that citizens will regard it as a duty to assist in alleviating the distress of those less fortunately situated by providing the "sinews of war," which will enable fresh reliof works to be undertaken. The need for that assistance, it is asserted, is none the less urgent in spite of the coming of summer with its usual promise of bettor times.

Owing to the extensive territory the collectors have to cover and the limited time at their disposal, householders will materially assist if they have their contributions ready when the ladies call. All collectors for the Mayor's fund have official badges, and receipts will be given where desired. The amount collected through this fund bears a Government subsidy of pound for pound up to £II,OOO.

Meanwhile, the work of canvassing business firms is nearing completion, but it will bo necessary to carry over the appeal until Monday, as some ground has not yet been covered. It is not expected that an indication as to the success of the "drive" will be available until completion. At the present time, many lists are still outstanding.

MAYOR'S FUND TOTALS £5868.
