CIVIL ENGINEERS.
CONFERENCE AT HAMILTON. CIVIC WELCOME EXTENDED. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. 3 HAMILTON, Saturday. The annual conference of the Auck- ' land branch of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers is being held in Hamilton. A civic -reception was fiven tn the delegates this morning by the Mayor, Mr. J. R. Fow. The Mayor said the visit of the engineers to Hamilton was regarded as an honour. In carrying oat ■ its plan of public works the council had endeavoured to conform to a town-planning scheme. It had endeavoured, for instance, to provide easements at street corners. Hamilton had many natural beauties and the council had encouraged the Beautifying Society in its efforts to improve the appearance of the parks and all waste land. It had just taken over a beautiful piece of native bush at Claudelands and had approved a scheme foi .wakiiig Garden Place * civic centre. Hamilton had passed through a period ot financial depression, but he felt sure if, had a bright future before it and that prosperity would soon return. • Mr. L. B Campbell, chairman of the Auckland branch of the society, thanked the Mayor for his welcome and said the society was anxious to assist loml bodies in meeting their engineering difficulties. He was charmed with Hamilton' 3 appearance and felt convinced that, with the rich farming country it had behind it, it would become lisfore the largest inland town in New Zealand. The engineers visited the Rotowaro coalmines, the Hamilton municipal works and the electrical works dnr-, ing the week-end.
