LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
FINAL GAMES OF THE SEASON. UNEMPLOYMENT FUND MATCH. DEVONPORT DEFEATS PONSONBY. The final League games of the season were played at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when the Auckland Rugby League provided an attractive programme to assist the Mayor's unemployment fund. The attendance was about 5000. The principal attraction was the meeting of Devonport and Ponsonby, and the former won comfortably by 27 points to 19. Both teams fielded several junior players. The spectators thoroughly enjoyed the game between the two teams of old players, and some amusing incidents were witnessed. The team selected by "Apai" Asher won by 8 points to 6. Prior to the football three events were decided by the Auckland Amateur Athletio Club. DEVONPORT'S GOOD WIN. Devonport fielded a strong team, and its back division, combining well, proved too speedy for Ponsonby. The game opened at a last pac» Lau«i?y made a good run and Allen scored. The kick failed. The Ponsonby backs were again prominent and Gardiner raced through the defence. Although tackled by Simmonds, Delgrosso carried the ball over to score an unconverted try. Smith made a good dash well into Devonport s territory, but L. Scot carried play to the other end. when L. Seagar kicked a fine penalty goal. Devonport rallied and from a forwani rush, Hunt scored and Seagar converted. From near halfway, Seagar made a splendid opening for Ruby to outpace the opposition and score a good try, which Seagar converted. Beattie scored another try after running from halfway. Beagar again converted.- At half-time the scores were: Devonport, 17; Ponsonby, 6. Devonport had the bette, of the play :n the second half and Ruby and Dixon were prominent in good runs. Ponsonby defended solidly until A. Scott a fine individual try. Seagar kicked his fifth goal. Good play by A. Scott, paved the way for Devonport'B next try. and Seagar Bcored and added his sixth successive goal. The Ponßonby backs combined well m a rush from which Allen scored. Peckham converted. Just before the game ended Delgrosso made a fine run through the Devonport backs to score between the posts. Langley converted. The game ended: Devonport,. 27: Ponsonby 19. - OLD TIMERS* MATCH. The curtain-raiser to the chief fixture was played between two teams of veteran league players, who provided occasional flashes of good football. Soon after the kick-off E. Asher made a good run and, from a scramble, McKubrey scored. A minute later W. Davidson scored and Gibbon converted. A good penalty goal by G. Davidson equalised the scores. Just on time Mincham beat the opposition, and G. Hunt scored, giving Asher's team victory by 8 points to 5. OTHER MATCHES. Fourth Grade Final. —Devonport. 12, beat Richmond. 6. Morrison Shield Game.—Wright and. Jacques, 9, beat Hebald, 0. House Match.—Post and Telegraph, 22, boat Linesmen, 2.
