NEW RAILWAY OUTLET.
NORTHERN ROUTE FROM CITY MANY PROBLEMS INVOLVED. A Railway Department survey party is now investigating the route of the new northern outlet from the city, which will run for a distance of three miles from the city before joining the existing North line at Morningside. The route will be through a very thickly-populated area, and a great deal of preliminary work has been found necessary in searching out property titles, locating buildings on plans and bringing together all the other information required for survey plans. The route includes a tunnel approximately 1A miles long from Newton Road to Beach Road. Part of the object of the present survey is to provide the data to enable a decision to be made whether to go underground at Newton Road or tc continue cutting further on toward Pitt Street. , It is a question of the relative values of the properties that would hav< to be acquired in either case, and the engineering problem of balancing excavations against filling is also involved.
