AUCKLAND SPRING MEETING - ; "' v CONCLUDING DAY'S SPORT. DEAD HEAT IN CHIEF EVENT. STAR STRANGER AND MASK. AUSSIE AGAIN WINS SPRINT. ■' Fine weather favoured the concluding day of the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting at Ellerslie yesterday and there was an attendance estimated at 10,000. The track was hard and fast and the racing was excellent. Star Stranger and Mask deadheated in the King Edward Memorial Handicap, after a great struggle over the last furlong. Aussie proved himself a fine sprinter by winning again, carrying 8.2 to victory in handsome style in the Epsom Handicap. Most of the winners were well backed, but Pendavies and Star Stranger were the only favourites to return dividends. The totalisator handled £43,913 10s, compared with £39.203 on the corresponding day last year. The total investments for the meeting amounted to £113,743, compared with £95,970 10s last year, an increase of £17,772 10s. Several inquiries were held into incidents in connection with the racing, but in each case no action was taken. DETAILS OF THE RACING. NORMANBY HANDICAP. Anchor and Karamu were practically together m front, and a few lengths clear of Rendal, who was followed by Blue Sky and . York Abbey. Passing: the stand K.aramu just led Anchor, while York Abbey Blue, Sky. Kendal and Slump were followin* in fairly close and Town Hall tailing off. Anchor jumped to the front at the fence by the Bix-furlonsr cost, and then had Kamehameha. Karamu and Blue Sky as his nearest attendants. Four furlongs from home Anchor and Kamehameha drew away from the field and there was little between them at the last fence. In the run home Anchor drew out to win easily by six lengths from Kamehameha. who defeated Blue Sky by eight lengths. Kendal was fourth, with Slump, Karamu. York Abbey and Kahepoto following at intervals Anchor gave a fine display of fencing and was , always travelling like a winner. He is an improving horse that Bhould win more money this season. CiviHty was a pronounced favourite for the Epsom Handicap, being over twico as oil backed as the second choice, Aussie. Civility and Ballymoy II moved first, but Civility soon lost her position. Ballymoy 11. going on In front from Gold Acre. Aussie and • c inel 1 > Before two furlongs were covered Ballymoy 11. dropped quickly. Finelli taking charge, to lead through the cutting from Aussie.. Tinokoa. Gold Acre. Hovent Garden. Ballymoy 11. and .Civility. Finelli was just in front of Aussie entering the straight, with Tinokoa handy and then Gold Acre. Covent Garden and Civility. Below the distance Finelli was beaten and Tinokoa. ran up to the front with Aussie. This pair had the field beaten and. splendidly handled by A. Tinker Aussie went on to win nicely bv three-narts of a length from Tinokoa. Covent Garden was three lengths away third, and Civilitv fourth. Then followed Grand Knight. Ballymoy IT., High Pitch King Emerald. Finelli and Gold Acre. Civility moved out smartlv but could not hold her position in the first furlong and. after drifting back to eighth, was running on in fourth position at the end. Aussie w °n .{ike a good horse and is undoubtedly a brilliant sprinter A Tine Finish. Fourteen faced the starter in the King Edward Memorial Handicap, Star Stranger being a good favourite, with Mask and Transformer also well backed. A good start was effected and Great Charter was Quickly in front, to lead past the stand from King Smock, Mask. Sleepy Sol and Desert G!o\ Running along the back Great Charter and Sleepy Sol were out several lengths from Mask, with Nippy. Desert Glow and Royal Mint also prominent. The order was little changed at the half-mile, where Nippy . ran up fourth, and Star Stranger could be seen moving up on the rails. Great Charter and Sleepy Sol were still clear of Mask as they entered the straight, while Desert Glow and Star Stranger were also handy. Nenr the distance Mask and Star Stranger on th< outside closed on the leaders. Mask and Star Stranger then had a great tussle ovei the last furlong and as they crossed the lini the judge was unable to separate them Desert Glow was fourth, followed By Nippy Transformer, Lord Star, and Barometer. -The Onehunga Steeplechase waß nothing more than a farce. The three acceptors were saddled up. .but Taitaiata was lame and. after he was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon. Dr. W. C. Ring, the stewards ordered his withdrawal. There was little betting on the race and Pendavies was a slightly better favourite than Glenotus. From the start Pendavies went away in front and, after crossing the second fence, be was a sure winner, barring accidents. The fence was the water-jump and here Glenotus, tried to shirk his task and crashed into the fence, throwing his rider into the water. A couple of spectators and a policeman standing nearby helped the rider to catch the horse, but it took somi time to adjust the bridle, which had been nulled, off by the rider in the fi-lling. By the, time Glenotus got going ngaiit. Pendavies was four furlones in front and, nimDing safely, he won by two furlongs from Glenotus. who got round without furthei mishap. Tsually Glenotus is a very reliable fencer and seldom makes mistakes, but he has shown a dislike for the water-jump and did something similar tc what he did on this occasion, while schooling one day. Firm Favourite Beaten. All started in the Musket Stakes, Prodici was a firm favourite, nearly twice as well backed as the second choice, the OrewaLook Out bracket. Chit, who was tr-ul !e-----some at the post, was first to move, while Look Out was badly left. Chit led t u -Minih the cutting from Valour, Coruscate, Prodice King Val and Marion's Birthday, with the others strung out. Running into the straight Chit was just clear of Coruscate, who wai several lengths clear of Marion's Birthday Shot Silk and Prodice. Ridden right out Chit gave nothing a chance in the straight and won by four lengths from Marion's Birthday. who beat Prodice by three lengths. Orewa was fourth, followed h\ Look Out, Coruscate, Shot Silk and Nankii Blue. The meeting concluded with the Liverpool Handicap,, for which Thaw was a good favourite. with Le Choucas and Archeno alsc well backed. D»v Guard and Kiosk were first out while Thaw got away bndly.
