BOXING IN SYDNEY.

PURDY LOSES ON -POINTS. DEFEATED BY AMERICAN. (Received October 8, 1.5 a.m.) A. and N.Z. .SYDNEY, Oct. 7. At the Sydney Stadium this evening Charles Purdy, the Auckland boxer, was defeated on points by Jackie Pilkington, of America, in a bout of 15 rounds. Purdy weighed 9st. and Pilkington 9st 7Jjlb. The American tried desperately to score a knock-out throughout • the fight, but Purdy's clever evasions nullified his efforts. For the first three rounds Pilkington scored freely with both hands to the head. After the fourth round Purdy rallied and commenced to attack, but the American carried too many guns, and with heavy punching by both hands forced the New Zealander to slow down. In .the seventh round both men tripped and fell. Pilkington on rising attacked fiercely and drove Purdy to a corner and badly punished him, and made him hang on desperately The New Zealander made a good recovery, and in the next two rounds scored a majority of the points. He anticipated Pilkington's fierce and wild attacks. In the eleventh round Purdy was almost knocked out by a left to the jaw, but by clinching he weathered the round. Purdy won well over the remaining rounds, but his opponent had scored too big a margin of points, and at the conclusion he was declared the winner The decision received a mixed reception. The principal fight of the week was held in the Stadium on Friday instead of Saturday, as had been previously announced. The Stadium management say the change was made in order that the attendance, which has recently suffered badly owing to the mechanical hare racing, should not have to face the competition of a counterattraction.
