MEAT FOR GERMANY.

TRADE OF AUSTRALIA. BARRIER TO DEVELOPMENT. (Received October 7, 7.10 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON. Oct. 7. A representative of the meat industry in Australia, Mr. Ross Grant, has returned from a visit to leading centres in Northern Germany, where he mado inquiries into the possibilities of developing the meat trade with Australia. At present 120,0(30 tpns of meat a year can be imported into Germany free of duty, but a very heavy duty is imposed on all meat exceeding this quantity. This prohibits the import on favourable terms of meat from Australia. The future depends on the result of a controversy at present being waged between, the agriculturalists and the Socialists. The former are demanding a reduction of the amount of duty-free meat, but the latter want the amount increased bv 80.000 tons. Mr. Grant says it, is felt in Hamburg that Australia can improve on the present position of sending one-sixth of the meat imported into Germany if the firms are directly represented.
