WOMEN JUSTICES.

VICTORIAN APPOINTMENTS. ADVANCE IN WOMEN'S WORK. [from our own correspondent.] SYDNEY, Sept 29. More women justices of the peace have been appointed in Victoria, where they have the right, which is exercised, of sitting on the bench In New South Wales, where almost every other person now is a J.P., the right of adjudication does not obtain In Victoria, so far, appointment as a justice of the peace is deemed an honour It is pleasing to note that one of the women chosen by the Victorian Govern rnent is Miss Edith Onians, who for many years has been the central figure of the Newsboys' Society. There is not a newsboy in Melbourne who has not experienced the beneficial influence of Miss Onians' work; there is not one whose personal history she does not know. And she can tell of many fine incidents—-heart-stirring tales that reveal the courage of boys in the face of affliction. Many of the lads are the soie supports of widowed mothers. And Miss Onians can tell you just how much grit they show in their battles with adversity This last 12 months, indeed, ha marked a great advance in women's work in Victoria More progress has been made towards the attainment of women's political ambitions than during the past 50 years Think how many attempts Victorian women have made to gain access to State Parliament; think how many times their applications have been refused by varjous Premiers. Yet last April there were several, women candidates at the State election, and since then a great impetus has been given to women's ideas and aspirations.
